10th August is World Lion Day, which makes it a really good day to learn a little about lions and explore the activity ideas below!

Did You Know?

  • Lions are a magnificent big cat found living in the grasslands and open woodlands of sub-saharan Africa.
  • They are a very social animal, which is unusual for cats - they live in a group called a pride, with around 30 lions.
  • Females are the main hunters in the pride as they are faster and more agile than the large males.
  • Lions are also the laziest of the big cats, sleeping for up to 20 hours a day!

Five Fun Facts about Lions

  • Lions are the only truly social cats. Unlike tigers or leopards, lions live together in family groups called prides, which can have anywhere from 5 to over 30 members.
  • A lion’s roar can be heard up to 5 miles (8 km) away. It’s their way of saying “This is our turf!” to other lions.
  • The boys have fancy hairdos! Male lions grow thick manes, which make them look bigger and help protect their necks in fights. The darker the mane, the more impressive the lion is to others.
  • Lions spend most of the day relaxing. In fact, lions can snooze for up to 20 hours a day! Hunting is exhausting, and napping in the shade helps them conserve energy.
  • Lion cubs have spots! When lion cubs are born, they have faint rosette spots on their fur (a bit like leopard spots). These help them blend in with the grass and keep them safe until they grow up.
